Eight fold price increase only ‘a little more’
Peer Iuel lodged a consumer complaint against MTN with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) about the company’s claims that, “Using your cellphone abroad costs a little more than it does from home”.
Mr. Iuel submitted that the advertisement is misleading as his bill went from a monthly average of R1 000 to R8 775.24 for the month of June despite the volume of calls decreasing significantly.
According to the ASA website, MTN addressed the merits of the matter ‘but also submitted that the wording in question has been removed from the website.’
The ASA ruled that MTN must withdraw their claims with immediate effect and that it may not be used again in future.
No free HTC TYTN
In a separate complaint Mr. Michael Perry said that while MTN advertised a “FREE HTC TYTN”, it was far from the truth. When Mr. Perry tried to cash in on this offer he was informed that the handset is not free but available at R1 999.
MTN responded by saying that that there was a printing error in the brochure, which will be corrected in the next publication.
Again MTN was told by the ASA to withdraw the advertisement with immediate effect and that it may not be used again in future.
