Samsung to launch app store

Samsung today announced that it will be launching a new on-device application store for its users in Europe, the UK and the US in September.

The store, which will be officially available on September the 14th will initially be accessible to Omnia and I8910HD users and will later be expanded to include other Samsung smartphone models.

Current plans show that the apps store will launch in thirty countries including Germany and Spain. No official comment regarding whether South Africa will be one of these territories has yet been released.

Like its Apple, BlackBerry, HTC and Nokia competitors the Samsung application store will include games, e-books, health related tools, and social network applications. Over 300 approved applications will be available on launch. This number is expected to grow to 2000 by the end of 2009.

Confirmed application developers currently include Gameloft, Electronic Arts and Capcom. This list is a sign that some of the applications will have a strong games based focus.

“With the launch of the Application Store, Samsung will increase mobile phone sales and add value for its mobile customers through the availability of carefully selected applications,” said Hosoo Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Media Solution Center. “The Application Store will expand the service channel, not only on handheld devices but also on PCs through the launch of new PC software. The software will allow customers to download applications and manage them on a PC to maximize service usability.”

To access the service, Samsung users will be required to download a firmware update.

The store will include free and paid applications. No official announcement regarding third party generated applications has yet been made.
