Suspended Manhunt 2 too violent for Sony and Nintendo
Manhunt 2 is based on the escape of a psychotic killer and an amnesiac scientist and depicts a murderous rampage. The tremendous violence of the game meant that it received an AO rating in the United States and it was banned in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Since receiving these ratings, Take-Two has temporarily suspended the planned July 10 launch of the game for both Sony Playstation and the Nintendo Wii.
This leaves Rockstar Games and Take-Two with the options of pulling the plug on the game, going back to the drawing board to lower its violence or appeal to the ESRB board.
According to the Associated Press, Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. said that it needed time to "review its options" but would "continue to stand behind this extraordinary game."
AP quoted the company as saying that, "We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment.”
Rockstar Games, a wholly owned subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software, is no stranger to gaming controversy and previously came under fire for one of its other creations ‘Grand Theft Auto’.
