Vuvuzela gets townships surfing
But computers – and everything about information and technology communications (ICT) – are the speciality of Vuvuzela Communications, based in Durban.
Craig Slevin and Adam Fraser formed the small outfit two years ago to sell fully equipped kiosks to township youngsters who want to become internet entrepreneurs.
The kiosks come with built-in computers and facilities for photocopying and sending faxes and SMS. Customers can also have their CV designed using a professional CV template.
“ICT services are now essential services, like water and electricity,” said Slevin. “We make it easy for people to use computers and understand them. We also offer training for people who want to learn how to use computers.”
These mobile internet cafes also offer prepaid internet to franchisees, something that will be useful to kiosk owners with an eye on the bottom line. A franchise costs R34 000.
In the past year, about 35 people took part in a pilot project run by Vuvuzela in conjunction with Vodacom and Cell C, determining the viability of the business. The participants were mostly owners of chat containers who bought the kiosks to expand their phone businesses.
For example, Peter Sheea, a new franchisee, will be running his business from the Clermont taxi rank in Durban.
