Website started to put pressure on Eskom
Solidarity has created a website where businesses as well as ordinary South Africans can log their Eskom related stories, the union said on Sunday.
Spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans said the website was designed to bring public pressure to bear on Eskom and government. The website would also create awareness of the types of problems South Africans face from power cuts.
"The website – www.eskomstories.co.za – was created to give South Africans the opportunity to share stories of inconvenience or damage as a result of electricity supply problems," said Kleynhans.
Solidarity appealed to businesses, individuals, hospitals, community organisations and other stakeholders to participate in the Eskom web hearings.
Inconveniences
All contributors' stories would be collated and handed to Eskom and government, said Kleynhans.
"Businesses must relate their production losses; the cost of generators, damage to equipment and all other losses."
The website would also log the inconveniences suffered by ordinary people such as gates not opening, children not being able to do homework, schools not being able to teach, accidents caused by out-of-action traffic lights, time lost in traffic snarl-ups and people not being able to cook food.
Eskom employees must also tell their stories as they work long hours under tremendous pressure to try and maintain the energy supply, said Kleynhans.
The union said South Africa had to create more generating capacity in the long term.
However, Solidarity was convinced that Eskom would be capable of supplying electricity in the short term, provided that maintenance and skills problems were resolved.
