MTN terminates Sundowns partnership
MTN South Africa announced that it has decided not to renew its sponsorship agreement with Mamelodi Sundowns and that the end of the 2007/08 season would be the last year of their involvement with the team that they have sponsored for the past three years.
Mamelodi Sundowns and MTN South Africa jointly announced today that they have decided not to renew their three year old sponsorship agreement which lapses at the end of the 2007-2008 season.
The joint decision by MTN SA and Mamelodi Sundowns to end the relationship comes after the parties failed to reach an agreement during the renegotiation phase of the contract.
In announcing the decision Tim Lowry, MTN SA Managing Director says: “After a successful and mutually beneficial three-year relationship with Mamelodi Sundowns, we have reached a joint and amicable decision to exit the partnership. We thank Mamelodi Sundowns for their contribution over the last three years and wish the team well in their future endeavors.”
Mamelodi Sundowns Media and Communications Manager Mahlatse Mphahlele says, “In MTN we have had a great partner over the past few years having enjoyed memorable moments including lifting the league trophy for two consecutive years. However, after our initial three year agreement and after we could not agree on the terms of another contract we have agreed to end the partnership.”
Despite the end of this particular partnership, MTN remains committed to the continued development of first-class football in South Africa and will continue its current sponsorship of PSL clubs Black Leopards and Golden Arrows.
