Mbeki on ICT
More work needs to be done to increase South Africa’s usage of information and communications technologies (ICTs), a meeting chaired by President Thabo Mbeki in Limpopo decided on Sunday.
Mbeki chaired the 8th annual meeting of the Presidential International Advisory Council (PIAC) on Information Society and Development (ISAD) which began on Friday at Kapama Lodge in Hoedspruit.
The meeting reviewed the PIAC’s work in the last eight years and expressed appreciation with the overall progress made in ICTs.
"It was also noted that more work needs to be done to increase South Africa’s usage of ICTs."
Mogeotladi Mogano was appointed as the co-ordinator of the PIAC and a chief executive officer of the e-skills’ council would be appointed within the next three months.
"It was agreed that advisors will work with Trade and Invest South Africa to ensure that the country continues to improve investment in ICTs."
Advisors will form a group which will advise government on energy saving, particularly in the ICT sector.
"They (advisors) indicated their readiness to assist South Africa in maximising the economic benefits of the 2010 FIFA World Cup."
