IT Rich List

The Business Times recently released their 2008 Rich List which calculated the wealth of the richest South Africans as of March 31, 2008.

This list shows that the combined wealth of the ‘10 richest individuals in SA stood at R 54.1 billion about two weeks ago, compared with R 114.6 billion on March 31’.

Telecoms and IT shareholders and consortiums account for six of the top twenty in the SA Rich List.  They are:

  • Elephant Consortium with R 3.997 billion through their 5.8% Telkom shareholding
  • Bill Venter with R 3.238 billion through his 56.14 Allied Electronics Shareholding
  • Phutuma Nhleko with R 2.374 billion with his 1.03% MTN shareholding
  • Rob Nisbet with R 1.748 billion through his 0.76% MTN shareholding
  • Irene Charnley with R 1.674 billion through her 0.73% MTN shareholding
  • Sifiso Dabengwa with R 1.673 billion through his 0.73% MTN shareholding

Other individuals involved in IT in the top 150 wealthiest South Africans include Chris Kruger from Africa Cellular Towers (65), Santie Botha from MTN (66), Robert Gumede from Gijima AST Group (69) and Jens Montanana from Datatec (77).

The richest local investor is Lakshmi Mittal with R 45.680 billion from his 52.02% shareholding in ArcelorMittal South Africa.  This value has however declined to R 16.231 billion as at 14 November – a drop of over 64% in the last eight months.

Yearly pay package

When it comes to total salary packages IT executives and directors are also not doing badly.  

MTN Executive Sifiso Dabenga received a total pay package in 2007 of R 31.519 million.  MTN CEO Phutuma Nhleko also did not do too poorly with a total 2007 package of R 16.257 million.

Other IT executives in the top 150 include Reunert CEO Boel Pretorius with R 10.780 million and Dimension Data Executive Chairman Jeremy Ord with R 10.101 million.

The highest pay package in 2007 went to Anglo executive Bobby Godsell with a total pay package of R 54.189 million.
