South African users logged onto Facebook found that messages in their inboxes and profiles were no longer private.
There are currently 178000 users registered on Facebook’s South Africa network.
While for some the dysfunctional service did little more than halt their social lives for the day, for many having their deepest, darkest secrets generally available could lead to disastrous results.
According to Paul Jacobson, an attorney dealing with new media , there is little recourse to claim damages from the operators of the service.
Jacobson said: “When people click on the box that they agree with the terms and conditions of Facebook’s operations, they are in a way signing a contract with the service.”
Facebook users are protected by the laws of the US state of Delaware, but if they claim they suffered loss or damage as a result of yesterday’s glitch, they would have to take their case to court there.
