Samsung unveils 3D Blu-ray player and TV
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has kicked off in Las Vegas, promising to be a showcase of all the latest and greatest consumer electronics. With a plethora of new product announcements to come from the show, Samsung wasted no time in unveiling their 2010 line of 3D capable home theatre products.
Winner of the CES 2010 Award for Innovation, the Samsung BD-C6900 Blu-ray disc player supports the new 3D Blu-ray standard which was finalised in December. Few details are known on the exact specifications of the device but one can assume that it will be a high-end product packed with the latest features. Samsung provided no information on pricing, or when the product will be available.
The flagship Samsung television for 2010 was also revealed: the LED 9000 series. The televisions are ultra-thin, and while no exact dimensions are known, they have been described as no thicker than a pencil, meaning they are potentially slimmer than 1cm.
Boasting 240Hz technology, the panel is more than ready for high definition 3D content. A stylish remote control for the series with a touch screen that can show video from other sources (such as a second TV channel) was also introduced.
Other big news was that the 9000 series will feature a processing chip that converts 2D images to 3D in real-time. This chip will also be packed into the new top-of-the-range LED 7000 and LED 8000 series of televisions that will emerge in 2010. The touch screen remote will also be available as a separate product for the new 7000 and 8000 series.
Samsung has not yet revealed any information on the pricing, or the range of models in the new 9000 series and the updated 7000 and 8000 series.
Samsung also announced their new app store – Samsung Apps (http://www.samsungapps.com/). Taking advantage of the Ethernet and WiFi capabilities of the new range of televisions, users can access content and applications directly through their TV sets. Samsung said the store will be live for use on TVs by July.
Finally, Samsung used CES to announce a partnership with DreamWorks Animation and Technicolor to jointly promote the adoption of 3D television in the home. DreamWorks will be bundling the first 3D Blu-ray – Monsters and Aliens – with Samsung 3D monitors.
Earlier in January Samsung announced a deal with RealD that will see the integration of RealD 3D technology into Samsung televisions and the development of a range of the special eyewear required to view RealD formatted images. The RealD format is behind a number of 3D movie hits, such as Avatar.
Samsung SA representatives for the audio-visual product range could not be reached for comment on these new products at the time of publication as they are currently attending the CES event, which is running until 10 January.
