First Android tablet from Dell

The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) being held in Las Vegas has so far not failed to impress with a range of exciting product announcements. With the rumoured Apple tablet device – now known as the iSlate – set to become official within the next few months, it seems that other companies are also keen to hop on the tablet bandwagon.

Dell has announced their entry into this market segment, by showing off a new tablet device at CES. It would appear that the new breed of tablet devices are going to be referred as ‘slates,’ and Dell wasn’t shy about using the appellation. Whether or not this is the rumoured ‘Dell Streak’
device is not clear, as Dell representatives at CES refused to elaborate.

What is known about the device so far is that it has a 5 inch touch screen and a 5 megapixel camera with an LED flash. A SIM slot was also spotted, meaning it should have 3G data capabilities. Dell representatives were not divulging any more information on the hardware specifications. Likewise, pricing and availability information is also unknown.

The most interesting bit of information is that it will be running an Android operating system. This makes the Dell tablet the first portable tablet style device that isn’t primarily a cell phone.

With the flexibility of an Android OS, this breed of tablet may become a competitor to the likes of the iPod Touch. With no hardware specifications yet known, it remains to be seen how it will stack up against the Apple iSlate.

Dell announced that they have a number of tablet devices waiting in the wings, each with different sized screens. It was also hinted that other operating systems may be on the cards for the tablets. Dell South Africa representatives could not be reached for comment by the time of publication.
