AMD launches budget HD 5670 GPU

AMD today announced the release of the most recent addition to its DirectX 11 supporting the HD 5000 line in the HD 5670.

Priced at less than $100 (roughly R750) the HD 5670 is set to offer DirectX 11 gaming to gamers at a lower price point than AMD’s HD 5700 and HD 5800 range. The unit itself features GigaFLOPS of compute power and GDDR5 memory. According to AMD the HD 5670 offers a 20 percent increase in performance when compared to other graphics units in the same class.

In addition the HD 5670 will also feature support for AMD’s Eyefinity technology, which will allow users to connect up to three displays to the unit for panoramic gaming.

“AMD recently celebrated the shipment of its two millionth DirectX 11 graphics chip. AMD has already enabled DirectX 11 support for the majority of the PC market and today’s introduction of the ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card is yet another  clear indication of AMD’s commitment to address the strong market demand for DirectX 11-capable graphics cards,” said Matt Skynner, vice president and general manager, AMD Graphics Group.

“Combined with the successful launches of the ATI Radeon HD 5970, ATI Radeon HD 5800 series and ATI Radeon HD 5700 series, AMD has defined the DirectX 11 gaming experience like no other, bringing graphics innovations like ATI Eyefinity technology and ATI Stream technology to millions of consumers worldwide.”

Thus far AMD is the only component manufacturer offering GPUs with DirectX 11 support. The company’s closest competitor Nvidia is due to release its Fermi range, which will also offer DirectX 11 support, in April.

Thus far no official announcement has been made regarding the local availability or pricing of the HD 5670.
