‘Bigger = better’

Alex Morse, Acer product manager: Axiz, says that “smaller and lighter” is now being replaced by “bigger and better” in the form of the latest range of 17” notebooks.

Morse explains that although clients like the slim, stylish look and feel of notebooks, as well as the flexibility and mobility notebooks offer, they are often forced to make a compromise in terms of smaller screens and keyboards.

“Having a large form factor notebook offers a client the best of both worlds. They now have a big screen and big keyboard with an embedded numeric keypad (great for anyone using the numeric keys a lot like accountants, book keepers etc.), and all the “sexiness’ of a notebook. They also have the option to take it out to customers if they need to, or to carry it around the house with them as they finish off their work. This definitely beats sitting alone in the office/study while the rest of the family are all snuggled up around the heater watching TV!”

When it comes to the actual benefits of a 17” screen, as opposed to its 15” counterpart, Morse says there are many. “A 17” notebook offers its user everything from increased productivity when working to excellent entertainment benefits – the bigger screen is great for games and watching DVDs. These days more applications require more real estate on screen which a 17” enables. Using a spreadsheet for example, becomes a pleasure on a wider screen, as far more columns can be displayed.”

Clients who have invested in the extra two inches are already noticing a difference. “Feedback we have received about the latest 17” range from Acer has been overwhelming. Clients love the look and feel of the notebooks, saying that they are far more aesthetically pleasing than their previous bulky desktops. They are also enjoying the full benefits of having all their desktop options now available on a mobile platform without compromising on-screen size.”

As to what can be expected in the notebook space in the future, Morse says Axiz is seeing developments on both ends of the spectrum. “Twelve-inch notebooks are becoming more popular, particularly among mobile warriors and people on the move. They are also a great option for women as they weigh less than 2kg and so are easy to carry around between meetings or from room to room. We are also, however, seeing increased sales of the 17” notebook due to all of the added benefits.”

And, when it comes to the perfect notebook size, Morse believes 17” might just be it. “Although Acer does already have a 19” model available, the practicalities of going much bigger hamper larger options. Notebooks then become too heavy and cumbersome, and eliminate the benefits of… well being notebooks!”
