Toshiba launches world’s lightest laptop

According to Toshiba the Portege R500 is designed to give business users a stylish and productive notebook that is both sleek and extremely lightweight. The Portege R500 includes a 7mm optical disc drive – allowing the system to maintain its ultra portable form factor while not limiting the product’s overall functionality.

The inclusion of an integrated DVD-SuperMulti Drive into a system, which measures 19.5 mm thin eliminates the bulk and inconvenience of carrying external drives and cables.

The R500 features a 3D accelerometer, which helps guard the internal workings from damage as a result of accidental drops. This feature rapidly removes the hard drive head from between the hard drive plates as soon as it detects rapid movement in any direction, effectively ‘parking’ the hard drive in order to avoid damaging it if the R500 is dropped.

“What really differentiates the R500 from other lightweight laptops currently on the market is the fact that, while the R500 might be incredibly thin and light, it’s got the kind of functionality that would be found in PCs twice its size,” says Reon Coetzee, Toshiba marketing manager for South Africa and Africa.

The R500 incorporates an indoor/outdoor transflective 12.1-inch diagonal widescreen LED backlit display, which, when particularly used outdoors, uses natural sunlight to bring the display’s colours and images to life, making them crisper and sharper instead of other notebook screens that are near impossible to read in direct sunlight.

The Portege R500 measures just 25.5 mm in height at the rear and 91.5 mm at the front, and features a full-size screen and keyboard. Battery life is estimated between 7 and 12.5 hours.
