Sweet gadgets

Even die-hard PC fans who use a Mac for longer than ten minutes swear by them. So perhaps there is something in the fact that all cool people on TV use a MacBook for their computing requirements.

Certainly, if coolness is a factor in buying computers, Mac ticks the boxes. Where it falls down, however, is on the specifications.

Take a look at the MacBook Air http://www.zastore.co.za/macbookair.php. It’s really light at 1.36kg and supremely good looking, but your MacBook Air is equipped with a (relatively) puny 1.6GHz processor and 80GB hard drive for R18 000. When you can buy machines specced with 2.4GHz processors and 320GB hard drives at the same price, you have to wonder ‘at what cost cool?’ And that’s up to you.

On phones, business minded folk have a lot to choose from, but the HTC Dual is a pretty cool option. Expect to shell out around R6800 for one, but get these benefits: TouchFLO touch-screen interface with a full 20-key slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a Menu system is designed to resemble a 3D cube. This allows users to “flip” the cube to reveal different menu options – such as photo dialling, Internet, multimedia, calendar and tasks. As usual, the phone is packed with a ton of connectivity and other features. Find out more at www.leaf.co.za

If gaming is your game and you haven’t tried a Nintendo Wii yet, then gaming is not really your game; see www.wii.com. Circular logic, sure, but the Wii pushes and changes the boundaries of human-machine interface and puts it to good use for especially sports titles. With the launch of combat titles like Medal of Honour, expect Wii to get better as that interface is extended to first person shooters; check out http://www.ea.com/medalofhonorvanguard/.

The console is not as expensive as competitors, either, which has got to come as good news.
