Antec case has no power

A recent online promotion of an Antec performance TX 1050 black case, which claims to have a SP-500 PSU which includes Advance Cable Management, landed online shopping portal Digital Planet in hot water.

Mr Ahlschlager lodged a consumer complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) against Digital Planet’s internet advertising promoting its Antec performance TX 1050 black case.

Mr Ahlschlager submitted that the advertisement is misleading as it states the case includes a power supply unit, however that is not the case.

Digital Planet said that it was a data capture error which caused the problem.  It has since changed its advertisement to state that the power supply is not included.

The ASA accepted Digital Planet’s response on condition that the advertisement, in its current format is not used again in future.

“We have 20 000 IT products on our website and we rely on the manufacturer information to keep our site current. In our eight year history as the leading online IT retailer, we’ve published over 200 000 products. Occasionally there is an error and when we discover it, we change the product information,” said Digital Planet’s Neil Watson.

“There really is a lot of hype over a very small issue. I think use of the word “misleading” implies intent on our part which is false. It was a simple data capture error which was corrected.”

“Each product page is considered an advert by the ASA so if someone copies the ASA on the email to us detailing the error, they have to follow procedure, open a case and let us know. We simply change the product info and the issue is resolved. They issue their paperwork and it is the end of the story,” Watson concluded.
