The most popular servers
HP and Dell still top the list of most popular servers according to a report released this week by analyst Gartner.
According to the report, which looks at the global server market in the first quarter of 2008, HP and Dell lead the pack with 30.1% and 22.7% of global sales respectively. The two also dominate server sales in the Europe, Middle East and African (EMEA) market.
Server heavyweight IBM still lags HP and Dell in both the global and local markets at around 13% of sales.
Locally, however, HP is significantly more dominant with 40.5% of server sales in the EMEA market compared with Dell’s 19.1% and IBM’s 13.1%.
Big iron vendor IBM, however, claimed the second spot in terms of global revenue earned at US$13.9 billion. HP narrowly clung onto its revenue lead, earning US$4 billion in the first three months of the year.
Further down the table, Fijitsu lost some way together with Sun Microsystems. Neither Fijitsu not Sun Microsystems managed to break through the 100 000 barrier for server sales globally.
In the EMEA market HP shipped 289 687 servers, Dell 136 749 and IBM 94 681. Further down the charts, Fijitsu sold around 52 000 servers in the EMEA market and Sun sold just 29 639.
