New Microsoft gaming keyboard
Microsoft added to its hardware lineup yesterday with the new SideWinder X6 keyboard (Sidewinder keyboard image), a gaming-specific keyboard which can be configured as users want it.
The X6 includes a switchable keypad which can be attached to either the left or the right hand side of the keyboard. The switchable keypad can be used as a normal number pad during work hours and as a programmable macro pad in gaming mode. The X6 can store up to 90 macros per game and includes a back light for low-light conditions.
"We know that consumers don’t want to pull out and set up a second keyboard for a gaming session, so we created a device that was perfect for both gaming and regular computer use," said Kevin Flick, user researcher for Microsoft Hardware. "With the switchable key pad, gamers will have a fantastic, customisable experience whether they’re playing their favourite game or creating Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentations."
The X6 keypad can be toggled between standard mode and two preset game modes with LEDs on the keypad indicating which mode the keyboard is in.
The keypad can also be configured to switch between modes based on the application being used at the time.
Announcing the X6 yesterday, Microsoft hardware also announced the SideWinder X5 mouse. The X5 is a nine-button mouse with vertical side buttons and adjustable sensitivity up to 2 000 DPI.
The SideWinder X6 Keyboard and SideWinder X5 Mouse will be available from September and will cost R599 and R799 respectively.
