Intel pushes solid state
Intel yesterday upped the ante for solid state drives (SSD) with the release of two new 80GB SSDs for laptop and desktop computers (Intel SSD image here).
The X18-M and X25-M SSDs are initially available in 80GB capacities but Intel says a 160GB version is already in the pipeline.
SSDs are becoming increasingly popular as they generally consume less power than traditional hard drives, improving the battery life of portable devices.
The new X18-M is a 1.8-inch drive and the X25-M a 2,5-inch drive.
The 80GB drive offers read speeds of up to 250MB per second and write speeds of up to 70MB per second.
Intel is also expected to introduce a new line of SSDs for servers within the next three months. The server SSDs will be called the X25-E Extreme SATA Solid-State Drive.
