Secure mobile drives

As the price of external hard drives plummet and data needs increase, computer users increasingly carry around valuable data on external hard disks and flash drives.

But doing this can pose a security risk as they are easily stolen or lost.

Toshiba has released a new 200GB ruggedised SecuRed portable hard drive which is aimed at users that need to transport data but don’t want it compromised.

Reon Coetzee, marketing manager for Toshiba South Africa and Africa, says that "people need to ensure that their information is secure and that if they do ‘carry their lives’ on these devices, that they are safe from damage and that the information stored on them cannot be accessed by unauthorised people.

"Apart from the cost implications of having to replace a damaged hard drive, many businesses rely heavily on backups and critical information, which may be stored on these portable devices, which, if lost, could quite seriously damage a business financially and strategically.”"

The SecuRed drives are spill-proof and include technology for detecting and compensating for knocks and bumps.

To prevent unauthorised access to the data on the drive the drives use biometrics for security.

"With a combination of a fingerprint reader and powerful encryption technology, information is secure and consumers can rest assured that their documents, music, videos and photos are under lock-and-key," Coetzee says.

SecuRed hard drives are available in SA and sell for R2799.
