Mac more popular than ever
Thanks to its ongoing innovation and good marketing, Apple is now estimated to own more than 8% of the PC market for the first time ever.
According to a recent report by Net Applications which compares PC usage based on Internet access, Mac claimed 8.23% of the PC market in September 2008. In the previous month Mac accounted for 7.86%. What is notable is that while there has been some variation between months, September was the first time Mac topped 8% and over the past two years Mac has grown by a full 3%.
The survey by NetApplications is based on a study of the operating systems accessing the Internet during the surveyed period. While this obviously excluded those PCs not accessing the Internet, the study is believed to reflect an accurate trend.
On the other end of the scale Windows-based operating systems accounted for 90.29% of computers in use in September. Since November 2007 Windows has declined from 92.42%.
Widely seen as an operating system challenger, Linux commands less than 1% of market share although at 0.91% in September, is poised to break that barrier. In November 2007 Linux accounted for 0.57% of market share.
In comparison, Apple’s iPhone has grown from 0,09% in November 2007 to 0.32% in September this year.
