AMD bring 45nm CPU to server market
AMD today announced widespread availability of its 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor.
Formerly code named “Shanghai”, AMD’s new Opteron is said to deliver up to 35 percent more performance with up to a 35 percent decrease in power consumption at idle. AMD claim that Shanghai will offer superior virtualisation performance and increased performance-per-watt.
The new Opteron will support live migration capabilities, enabling a relatively easy upgrade path from outgoing 65nm Opteron’s.
“Flawless execution in bringing the 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor to market early results in a new performance leader for x86 servers,” said Imi Mosaheb, General Country Manager, AMD South Africa.
Current data centres are facing escalating pressures from the demand of increasing enterprise workloads, like web surfing and database applications. Emerging technologies such as cloud computing and virtualization require more efficient and balanced processing solutions.
45nm coming to desktops
AMD also will bring this higher-performance and more energy efficient 45nm processor technology to the desktop PC market in Q1 of 2009 with the AMD Dragon platform.
AMD Dragon will be the second generation AMD performance desktop platform, featuring all next-generation components in comparison to the first generation AMD “Spider” platform of 2008.
