Camera phones to support HD by 2012
At a recent international press conference Ericsson announced that by 2012 consumers should see the introduction of camera phones featuring 12-20 megapixel cameras. According to Ericsson, the units will also be capable of recording high definition video footage.
"We have an image of a mobile terminal equipped with digital camera and camcorder capabilities of the future," said Jonas Lundstedt, Ericsson’s director portfolio management
The terminal’s display will support a resolution of 1024×768 and an operating frequency of 1GHZ.
Ericsson also expects the high definition recording capabilities on mobile phones to be the equivalent of dedicated current high end camcorders.
In terms of communications, Ericsson expects the phone to support at least 100Mbs LTE internet connections.
Current HSPA technology has a maximum theoretical transmission speed of 7.2Mbps. “HSPA evolution” is expected to emerge later this year, and is expected to increase maximum data speed transmission to 21Mbps.
LTE is said to follow HSPA evolution over the next few years, and will increase theoretical bandwidth speeds to around 100Mbps.
In South Africa we are just getting comfortable with regular 3G technology which is limited to 3.6Mbps, so local LTE implementation will definitely take a bit longer to get here.
