Sony Centre opening in Eastgate postponed

Shoppers living in Johannesburg will have to wait until Thursday to take advantage of the many special offers at the opening of the Sony Centre in Eastgate Mall.

The shop was due to open on Tuesday, 16 December 2008. The Eastgate Mall Centre Management anticipated that about 400 people would make use of the opening specials, and arranged security accordingly.

However, more than one thousand people arrived before the store opened, making it difficult to control the crowd.  The South African Police Service advised that it would be prudent to postpone the opening in the interests of public safety.

Sony South Africa and the Sony Centre management apologised unreservedly for any inconvenience this may have caused to customers.

The shop will now open on Thursday at 09h00. The Sony Centre managers, Eastgate Shopping Centre management, Sony South Africa and the South African Police Service have concluded an upgraded security plan.

Shoppers at Eastgate can be assured that adequate security will be provided at all times, and that the queuing will be strictly managed by Eastgate Shopping Centre security as well as SAPS.

In order to effect this, the queuing will take place from Entrance Four of the Shopping Centre only. Access to the store from the rest of the mall entrances will not be allowed in order to avoid the issues faced on the 16th.

In addition, the mall management has stated that no customers will be allowed to spend the night within the mall building itself. All early queuing is to take place outside Entrance Four of the mall.
