Sony launches super slim LCD
In December Sony unveiled the world’s slimmest television set, the Bravia ZX1 (Sony Bravia ZX1 photo).
Today, for the first time, the Sony Bravia ZX1 became available in the UK for £3489 (R49,400), also making it one of the world’s most expensive 40” television sets.
The set is Full 1080p HD, operates using the Bravia engine 2, and makes use of Motionflow 120Hz technology. These are features you will find in many high end TVs today, however, the ZX1 is the only TV on the market that is less than 1cm in depth.
At 9.9mm, the LCD panel is slimmer than a piece of toast.
The ZX1 attains its sub-1cm depth by using light emitting diodes, which take up less space than regular backlighting fluorescent tubes.
The set comes in two separate parts; the screen itself, and a wireless transmitter. This allows for a neat, cable free wall mounting of the screen, while the transmitter can be put out of sight along with the cabling.
While Sony are cutting edge in LCD, analysts predict that these technologies are to be phased out before too long, and replaced by OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology. OLED panels will use a fraction of the power required for LCD and plasma as they require no backlighting.
