New Macs from Apple
The company also made a pre-release version of its Safari 4 web browser available last week. The 24-inch iMac now ships with twice as much storage and memory as before but costs less than its predecessor. All the new iMac models feature a glossy display with a built-in video camera, mic and speakers in a thin aluminium and glass design. They also have six USB ports plus an additional two on the Apple Keyboard, along with one FireWire 800 port.
The new Mac Mini – one of the smallest desktop computers on the market- features a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory and five USB ports. It also has FireWire 800 and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics, which allows five times better graphics performance than it was previously capable of.
Apple claims its new Mac Mini uses 10 times less power than a typical desktop PC, making it the world’s most energy efficient desktop. The Mac Mini will start at US$599 when it goes on sale in the United States, so expect to pay upwards of R7 000 in South Africa, making it a tad pricey.
With the current rand exchange rate haywire the usually pricey Macintosh range is now more expensive than ever for South
Africans, making Apple somewhat of a luxury for its loyal local fans.
Safari 4 is available for download to both PC and Mac users, offering an alternative to Internet Explorer and Firefox. The new browser claims to be the fastest yet and the only one that meets 100% compliance with web standards. It’s available for Windows and Mac from www.apple.com/safari.
