35% off Opteron processors

AMD announced today that it would embark on a global update campaign for its Opteron range. This programme is due to include 2000 series and 8000 series dual and quad core Opteron processors along with the upcoming six-core processor codenamed "Istanbul".

The company said that channel partners and customers would receive a 35% discount in price by upgrading their generation of AMD Opteron processors and guaranteed "a fast upgrade path to improve performance and energy efficiency within the data center without needing to replace and buy entirely new systems".

John Fruehe, director of business development at AMD, said that "in the current economic environment customers are trying to stretch their IT budgets and to extend the life of their technology investments more than ever, all while improving performance and energy efficiency. This program offers a unique value to our partners and customers, particularly when you consider the enhancements to the 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor and upcoming six-core Istanbul processor."

The Istanbul processor is slated to directly compete with Intel’s six-core Dunnington chip and will feature 6MB of L3 cache shared among all of the cores. Each core will, however, also be equipped with 512KB of L2 cache and is expected to support either DDR2 or DDR3 according to the CPU socket. Although the backwards compatible AM+ chip will feature DDR2 support the newer AM3 version will only operate with DDR3.

It is widely acknowledged, however, that the Opteron range is incredibly flexible in terms of quick and easy upgrade compatibility, which is sure to affect the price in the market.

The discount will also be offered to South African users although it will typically apply to channel partners and solutions providers.
