Hardware prices should include VAT

Well known PC hardware seller – PC International – was taken to task by a consumer, Mr. Wiese, for not displaying VAT inclusive prices on its website.  Mr Wiese lodged a consumer complaint with the Adverrising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) against PC International’s  internet advertisement that appeared on www.pcint.co.za.

The website lists various computer products and components as well as prices excluding VAT.   Wiese complained that the advertisement is misleading as advertisers are required to indicate prices that include VAT.  “In addition, the prices quoted makes the respondent’s prices seem cheaper while they are not, which potentially affords the respondent an unfair commercial advantage,” Wiese said.

The ASA was happy with PC International’s amendment of the website, and accepted the company’s response on condition that ‘the advertising originally complained of is not used again in future’.
