World’s Most Expensive Laptops
Laptops are generally considered expensive items with consumers typically spending anything between R 5 000 and R 30 000 to serve their mobile computing needs. Some laptop manufacturers however take laptop design and pricing to a whole new level. Here is a compilation of some of the most expensive laptops around.
Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds
As the only ‘normal’ laptop in this list the Lenovo W700ds is a unique piece of equipment. It was released in December 2008 and features a secondary pull out display, a 17” primary display, 2.53 GHz Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9000, 4GB RAM, dual 250GB 5200rpm hardrives (7200rpm is an option), numeric keypad and track pad.
The secondary screen is located in a pull out section of the primary display and can be used for work purposes in programs such as Excel and CAD for graphs and figures. It is a fully functional screen and can display applications such as Skype or instant messenger.
For business purposes the W700ds is an attractive desktop replacement with its dual screen display and extra features. It retails at $4500 (R 37 300).
Powermax Gold Plated Mac Book Pro and Swarovski Mac Book Air
Set in a 24K gold casing with a diamond studded Apple logo, the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo Mac Book Pro can be purchased in either 15.4” or 17” variations at $6499 and $7999 respectively.
This takes the prize for the most expensive Mac Book Pro on the market today. Powermax have also dot a Mac Book Air with over 12 000 Swarovski crystals set into a 24K gold plate. The 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo Air was debuted at the CeBIT 2008 conference and sells for $40 000 (R 331 141.38).
The Ego Bentley
A collaboration between luxury car manufacturer Bentley and lifestyle brand Ego has resulted in a $19 943 (R 165,141.28) notebook.
This fashionable piece of technology is handmade and clad in Bentley leather, complete with authentic Bentley cross over hand stitching. The chrome handle that is modelled into the chassis of the notebook is based on Bentley etching and the framing around its edges are white gold.
The Bentley ships with a 64 bit version of Microsoft Vista Ultimate, 160GB hardrive, 2GB of RAM, an AMD TurionTM 64 processor and a 12” screen. Although it looks more like a handbag than a laptop it also features 3 USB ports, S-Video out, a VGA port and 801.11 WLAN WiFi.
Tulip E-Go Diamond
The E-Go (short for easy going) Diamond features solid palladium white gold plates in which thousands of diamonds have been pave set. The design also includes two square cut rubies set in the tulip logo.
Like the Ego Bentley it also looks more like a handbag than a notebook and features a leather or fabric fold up exterior according to customer choice.
It ships with an AMD Turion64 processor, 1GB of RAM, 100GB hardrive and a 12.1” display and retails for $350 000 (R 2 899 832.08).
Luvaglio Laptop
Although this Laptop was released in 2007 it still holds the record for the most expensive laptop in the world at the $1 million mark (R 8 285 620.43).
Designed by luxury fashion technology house Luvaglio, this laptop boasts a 17” LED widescreen display with anti reflective coating, a 128GB solid state hardrive and a slot loading Blu Ray drive and an integrated cleaning device.
The power button consists of a rare coloured diamond that, when placed into a specific slot on the computer, turns it on and acts as security identification. The presentation box that it ships in is also diamond encrusted and designed to customer specifications.
Any other details regarding the Luvaglio laptop are sketchy. The website is password protected and by invitation only (http://www.luvaglio.com/) and the laptop is only being sold through two or three exclusive outlets throughout the world.
Although a 128GB solid state drive and a slot loading Blu Ray drive an impressive boast for a computer that was released in early 2007 somehow it doesn’t quite live up to its price tag.
