Not thinking clearly

All the usual expectations that I have of one of these computers were readily met: the build quality was great, the keyboard beautifully solid and the entire machine seemed to have retained the old Thinkpad aura despite being built by Chinese manufacturer Lenovo.

For those who have never experienced the joy that's the Thinkpad, the fundamental external design has remained the same since the brand was first introduced in 1992.

At the same time IBM has continued to add extra features to make the businessman's life easier, such as a small light to illuminate the keyboard in dark environments and a fingerprint reader that eradicates the need to remember your password.

The T60 isn't a consumer-focused product, lacking either a webcam or a memory card reader, although business machines are increasingly including those features.

Once I'd got the T60 set up and running on the company network, things began to go wrong. At this point I'm not sure whether I should be blaming the hardware or Windows XP for all kinds of strange behaviour. The system would freeze for no reason; the mouse would move around the screen and click randomly; and applica-tions would take forever to launch.

I find it hard to blame Lenovo for that, because those seem like software issues.

I still have a soft spot for the Thinkpad family but the review machine was definitely its black sheep.
