What you need to know

CyberX computer forensic expert Leon Nel bought one, similar to those used to infiltrate computer systems, from a spy shop in Pietermaritzburg last year.

“I bought the device, which sold for R5000, from Spyworld, a firm that sells surveillance equipment to security companies,” said Nel.

But you can also pick up cheaper products, ranging between R200 and R300 on the Internet.

The devices, commonly known as “key loggers” or “key grabbers”, can be bought as software which can be installed remotely via e- mail.

According to the Electronic Communications & Transactions Act of 2002 it is an offence to use key loggers for any purpose unless it is specifically sanctioned by the State.
