SynthaSite improves usability
SA web 2.0 start-up, SynthaSite, has overhauled the user interface for its drag-and-drop Ajax website building tool. The company is hoping that the enhanced user interface will make the tool more appealing to inexperienced web builders.
SynthaSite’s Web site builder (http://www.synthasite.com) is an online WYSIWYG tool designed to make it easy for non-technical users to build their own website.
Improvements in this release of SynthaSite include an easier sign-up procedure, simplified key functions and a range of user interface improvements. SynthaSite now also works with Picnik, an online picture editing tool that can be used to resize and manipulate images through a browser.
SynthaSite founder, Vinny Lingham, says that a large amount of work has gone into improve usability.
"At SynthaSite, usability is a key focus and we recently hired a director of user experience and a user interaction designer … When building web applications, one of the most important things to remember is that the average Internet user does not have the patience to go through the learning curve of your product – you need to make it as easy as possible, with as few steps as possible to achieve what your solution offers."
"We conducted live, in-person usability tests and outsourced ones with usertesting.com. We [also had] a team of guys from MIT conduct usability testing with the man on the street," says Lingham.
