SA’s biggest websites

Recently released statistics by the Online Publishers Association (OPA) and the Website Association of South Africa (WASA) sheds some light on the biggest websites in South Africa.

According to the latest statistics News24 is still the most popular website in South Africa with 1 796 559 unique monthly visitors, followed by IOL with 971 046 and MSN South Africa with 892 697.

The rest of the top 10 is completed by Hotmail-ZA, Webmail, MWEB, 24.com, Vodacom4me, MyBroadband and BidorBuy.

While News24 and IOL have dominated the local online news market for a long time, lower down the list a few battles are being fought.  The most significant change here is that The Times has overtaken Mail & Guardian Online to become the third largest news website in South Africa.

In the technology space MyBroadband remains the largest IT website, followed by Engineeringnews, ITWeb, IOL Technology, Tectonic and FMTech.

A few of South Africa’s largest websites, including ABSA, FNB, Standard Bank and Gumtree, are not members of either the OPA or WASA which makes an accurate assessment of their respective sizes difficult.

It can however be assumed that most banking websites as well as Gumtree and MTN will fit comfortably into the top 20 biggest websites in South Africa.
