Facebook growing in SA

Growing at around 33% over six months, South Africa is among the fastest growing countries using Facebook. A survey (http://tinyurl.com/65xz9k) of Facebook growth of the first six months of this year found that South Africa was the 12th fastest growing country outside of the US. At the end of July there were an estimated 971 908 South African users of Facebook, a 239 320 increase over the number at the start of February.

The growth in Facebook usage in South Africa is dwarfed, however, by the exponential growth in Latin America during the same period. Chile, for example, grew by more than 2 000% over the period, a massive increase in users of around 2.3 million. Venezuela, in comparison, had moderate growth of 683%, or 935 980 additional Facebook users in the six months.

The top six places for Facebook growth also included Argentina, Colombia and Peru with Greece being the only country outside of Latin America to make it into the top six places.

Facebook also claimed the title of "most popular social networking site" according to comScore numbers released last week. According to comScore, Facebook recorded 132 million unique visitors during June. In comparison, MySpace recorded 117.5 million visitors. MySpace was ranked number one in the previous comScore report.
