Twitter terrorism

A draft US Army intelligence report has listed Twitter as one of a number of online tools that could be used by "terrorists".

AFP reports that the intelligence report by the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion, posted on the website of the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), examines a number of mobile and web technologies and their potential uses by militants.

The chapter on "Potential for Terrorist Use of Twitter" says that "what makes Twitter unique is that the member can send Tweets(messages) near real time to Twitter cellphone groups and to their online Twitter social networking page. They can also Mashup their Tweets with a variety of other tools including geo coordinates and Google Maps or other electronic files/artifacts.

"Twitter has also become a social activism tool for socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political enthusiasts, hacktivists and others to communicate with each other and to send messages to broader audiences."

The report says paints a number of scenarios in which "terrorists" could combine the use of Twitter with online applications such as GoogleMaps and mobile phone pictures to carry out ambush attacks or suicide bombings.
