Digging Digsby

For many people, keeping up with the growing array of online social networks and services, from Facebook to Twitter, is daunting. One option is simply to unsubscribe from these services – any addiction can be kicked, after all. Thankfully, there are other ways to manage the services more effectively than keeping constant tabs on websites.

One is an open-source Web browser called Flock, built on Mozilla Firefox, which integrates social networking services into the browser window.

Another, which I like, is a new, free instant messaging (IM) and social networking tool called Digsby. Only available on Windows for now – Mac and Linux versions are coming – Digsby connects to a wide range of IM services, from Google Talk to MSN Messenger.

There are, of course, other IM apps that do this – Pidgin is a good example. Digsby’s real power is its integration with services such as social networking sites Facebook and MySpace and micro blogging tool Twitter.

Your Twitter feed – the list of messages, or "tweets" from the people you follow in the service – is easily accessible and it’s just as simple to tweet, all without the need to visit twitter.com.

The program also offers integration with a range of popular e-mail services, making it easy to check your e-mail quickly across multiple inboxes.

Digsby helps you stay in touch with your social networks and other information sources but takes out a lot of the PT. Recommended.
