Microsoft open source blogging tool

The world of blogging and content management systems has long been dominated by open source software, but now Microsoft has released its own content management system. And to top it all, Microsoft is releasing the software, called Oxite, as free software under its Microsoft Public Licence (MPL). The MPL licence is Microsoft’s own "open source" licence approved by the Open Source Initiative.

Although Microsoft is calling the software a "content management system" it does include many of the features popular in more familiar blogging software.

On the Oxite site the company says the software "provides you with a strong foundation you can build upon – pingbacks, trackbacks, anonymous or authenticated commenting … gravatar support, RSS feeds at any page level … web admin panel, support for Open Search format allowing users to search your site using their browser’s search box …"

At the same time Microsoft says Oxite is much more than justa blogging tool. The company says the software can both support large website as well as being customisable down to the choice of SQL server used by the tool.

Of course Oxite is built with a number of Microsoft technologies, including those created with ASP.NET and the likes of Visual Studio.

The Oxite software can be downloaded from the Oxite website.
