Postal problems strike again

Last year online retailer Amazon.com announced that rampant theft at the South African Post Office (SAPO) forced it to stop shipping to South Africa using standard post.

The Post Office promised to speak to Amazon.com, and was going to initiate an investigation into the apparent theft to get to the bottom of the problem.  According to the SAPO measures were put in place to deal with theft and corruption and the result was a 64 percent decline in postal crime.

Good news for local Amazon.com clients is that the online giant recently started shipping to South Africa again.  It is not clear what prompted this decision, but it looks like the problem of parcel theft has not been completely eradicated just yet.

International gaming retailer Shopto.net recently stopped shipping to South Africa, pointing to the high number of parcels going missing or being claimed as going missing as the main reason for its decision.

“As a result [of so many parcels going missing] it was just no longer viable for us to ship there [South Africa] at this time,” Shopto.net told a local supporter of the business.
