Traffic website live again

The Aarto traffic offenses website is back online after it was temporarily suspended following an “administrative error”, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Thursday.

“Motorists can now access information on AARTO and the planned points demerit system currently being piloted in Tshwane and Johannesburg metropolitan areas,” spokesman Tshino Mavhusha said in a statement.

On Wednesday, anyone logging onto the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) website — www.aarto.co.za — was redirected to GreedFines.co.za which featured a banner that read “Greed Fines – Not Speed Fines!”

According to a note on the page by the Justice Project SA (JPSA), established to defend the rights of motorists, it had bought the web domain from the RTMC.

A report in Beeld newspaper quoted JPSA chairman Howard Dembovsky confirming that the website had been bought. This was apparently to force the RTMC to listen to its complaints about the points demerit system.

In a statement on Wednesday, Dembovsky said they contacted the RTMC chief executive officer on Monday to bring to his attention a number of irregularities in the Aarto infringement notices issued by the Johannesburg metro police department from March to July this year.

He said both the RTMC and Aarto agreed during a meeting on Tuesday to work with the JPSA to address the concerns raised.

They also committed to ensure that the implementation of the system was conducted in a clean, fair and equitable manner.

On Thursday, the RTMC said it was “heartened” by the co-operation it received from JPSA.

“We were able to establish a good working relationship not only focusing on AARTO but also on a range of traffic management issues…

“The RTMC is heartened by the gesture from Justice Project South Africa to commit to promotion of road safety and increase law enforcement.”
