New sports website goes live
Fanbase.com said its long-term goal is to become the “definitive source of information on every athlete that has ever played sports, from famous to not-so-famous, professional to amateur, and present-day to distant past.”
The online Wikipedia-style database contains dedicated pages on 1.74 million athletes in 23 sports including Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, the National Football League and Major League Soccer.
While the website is mainly dedicated to US professional and college sports, it also contains some information on European football including the English Premier League.
Like Wikipedia, Fanbase encourages users to contribute content to player and team pages such as photos, videos and articles.
“Whether as a player or a fan, few things in life generate as much passion as sports,” said Fanbase president and chief executive Nirav Tolia. “We created Fanbase for users to showcase their enthusiasm for their favorite athletes and teams.”
The startup is backed by five million dollars in venture capital from Benchmark Capital, according to technology blog TechCrunch.
