Ubuntu updates Hardy

The Ubuntu Linux team yesterday released Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS, an update for Ubuntu Hardy Heron.

Ubuntu 8.04.1 is not a new release of Ubuntu but an updated CD image for Ubuntu 8.04. The release means that users trying Ubuntu 8.04 for the first time only have to download the CD image and not all the updates that have been released since the original release. Those updates, more than 200 of them, are included in the new CD image.

A new development with this release is option to upgrade directly from Ubuntu 6.06, the last long term support release, to 8.04.1 using the Update Manager.

As a long-term support release (LTS), Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is supported with maintenance updates and security fixes until April 2011 on desktops and April 2013 on servers.

"While we have fixed a number of audio-related issues, including a scheduler problem that caused audio stuttering under load, other audio playback problems may still exist, because so far we have been unable to verify a targeted fix that does not cause regressions for other users. We will continue to investigate this," the team said in its announcement.

Updated images have also been released for members of the Ubuntu family which do not carry the LTS label, namely Kubuntu, the Kubuntu KDE4 remix, Gobuntu, Xubuntu, and UbuntuStudio, with images for Mythbuntu to follow soon.
