Linux bug downs hardware

A serious bug in the 2.6.27 Linux kernel is wreaking havoc in the Linux world with most major Linux distributors scrambling to issue warnings and fixes for the problem.

The kernel bug affects Intel’s e1000e onboard network interface and is widely reported to corrupt the EEPROM of the adapter, effectively breaking it.

Most of the major Linux distributors have either announced the problem to users or put in place processes to blacklist the module until a fix is found.

OpenSuse is warning users with this hardware to avoid its OpenSuse 11.1 beta 1 release which has the 2.6.27 kernel.

Mandriva also issued a warning for its Mandriva 2009 pre-releases and has held back the release of its latest version to resolve the issue.

Ubuntu also said that it had blacklisted the module until a fix was found.

Intel has a support page (http://support.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-008441.htm) to help users  the details of their network adapters.
