Microsoft Windows 7 in January
While most observers expected Microsoft to release a beta version of Windows 7 by the end of 2008, it now looks likely that the company will only make that release in January next year.
Initially the beta release will be made to Microsoft’s developer network (MSDN) members. In particular, The Register reports that developers attending an MSDN road show on January 13 in Chicago will get copies of the Windows 7 beta on DVD. The January 13 MSDN event is the first of eight planned road shows for 2009.
Increasingly over the past six months Microsoft has played down its current Vista operating system as it readied for the release of Windows 7. And while Windows XP was expected to reach end of life a year ago, the product is still available as a preferred operating system for the growing netbook market.
The work that Microsoft has done to date on Windows 7, including the likes of touch screen support and better performance on lower-spec machines, suggests that the company is hoping that Windows 7 will become the natural replacement for Windows XP on netbooks.
