Vista Service Pack 2 delay
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 looks likely to be delayed by a month or more. According to TechARP.com, which correctly predicted Vista Service Pack 1 and XP SP3, believes that Microsoft will now only issue a release candidate of Service Pack 2 in March this year.
Commentators now believe that Service Pack 2 will only be released to manufacturers for production in the second quarter of 2009, rather than in April as originally predicted.
Users will then only be able to download Service Pack 2 at some point after the software is made available to resellers.
Windows 7
Delaying the release of Vista Service Pack 2 creates an interesting scenario for resellers who will no doubt be aware that Windows 7 could be hard on its heels.
Microsoft released a beta of Windows 7 in early January this year and is likely to ship the final release in late 2009 or early 2010. Which means that many hardware makers will be caught between sticking with Service Pack 1 machines and holding out for Windows 7 or investing in getting their hardware up to SP2 spec, which many may be reluctant to do.
With this scenario in mind Microsoft may well make SP2 optional for resellers.
