DStv HD PVR subscribers left in the dark

It appears that DStv High Definition (HD) PVR subscribers may find themselves waiting longer than expected for service additions such as DStv on Demand.

In September MultiChoice GM of corporate affairs Jackie Rakitla revealed that HD subscribers could expect a firmware update before the end of the year which would “address some isolated incidences such as deleting entire series, improvement to fast forward and rewind, TV Guide loading” as well as introduce features such as DStv on Demand to the package.

Based on administrative responses on MultiChoice’s DStv forum, testing procedures for these updates are still underway and “are not likely [to be ready] this year” adding that the company has “no date on a launch yet”.

MultiChoice has also revealed that the Season Pass update, also known as Series, is also unlikely to be available this year due to the testing process. Upon release this feature will ensure that decoders automatically record every episode in a predetermined season.

“Based on what we know to be required for the testing of series, yes, it is unlikely to be this year,” commented a MultiChoice representative on the company forums.

Facts regarding MultiChoice’s new ‘entry level’ HD PVR decoder, which is due to be available for roughly R2000, are also vague with a company spokesperson adding that “at this stage no launch date or price has been confirmed for the entry level HD PVR and [we] anticipate it will be some time before those dates are formally announced and confirmed.”

MultiChoice was contacted for clarification regarding these matters but at the time of publication no response had been received.
