SAIX-Verizon peering link problem causes downtime
Websites hosted on the Verizon network, which include high profile sites like MyBroadband, ITWeb and Ster Kinekor, were inaccessible to a large group of Internet users on Friday.
A peering link issue between Telkom’s SAIX and first tier ISP Verizon Business was to blame for this downtime which started around midday on Friday.
“At approximately 11h45 today, Telkom’s Internet network seized all routing to Verizon Business’s primary peering point in Johannesburg as well as the secondary point in the Cape Town region," says Edwin Thompson, senior executive operations regulatory and legal at Verizon Business SA.
"As soon as the problem was detected, Verizon Business engineers worked closely with Telkom’s site engineers to rectify the problem and all networks were restored at approximately 13h15 this afternoon. Verizon Business is currently awaiting a final report from Telkom on the reasoning behind the failure and will communicate this to customers as soon as possible,” Thompson concluded.
