Multichoice explains HD-TV requirements
Multichoice recently announced that they will be launching High Definition TV in the middle of next year.
Details are still sketchy, but Multichoice said that they are currently investigating HD content. “There are globally more than 200 HD channels, some of which are National Geographic and BBC. We are currently researching these to find out which channels we would bring onto our platform,” Multichoice said.
Requirements
Apart from the obvious high-definition television, some subscribers may have to upgrade their decoder (LNB). [For the less technical readers, a low-noise block converter (LNB) is used in communications broadcast satellite reception.]
“If subscribers already have a twin LNB, they will need a multiswitch device for splitting the signal into 4. For a new subscriber or a subscriber with a single feed LNB, a new LNB will be required,” said Multichoice.
According to Duncan McLeod’s FMTech, Multichoice ‘recently signed an agreement with Pace Micro Technology of The Netherlands for the supply of HD-ready decoders with personal video recorder functionality.’
Multichoice could not give any details regarding the costs of the equipment or the service itself, saying that they can only advise on price closer to the launch period, as this is still being confirmed.
