DSTV Broadband now available
The new DStv Web TV service from Multichoice, hosted at http://www.dstvbroadband.co.za/, is now available to all DStv Premium subscribers.
To make use of the service DStv Premium subscribers must register online after which they can then choose from the various available online channels, including MNet, Supersport, Kyknet, Channel O, MNet Movies, Go and MK.
The shows are offered in both low resolution and high resolution formats.
The size of a standard movie – in this case The Price of Forgiveness – is around 187 MB in low resolution and 416 MB in high resolution. A shorter show like Egoli is 55 MB in low resolution and 121 MB in high resolution.
The online content is available for both streaming and download.
Bugs in the system
The system functions, but a few bugs still seem to be present.
When trying to view a video, a manual login is required. But when an active username and password is supplied the system simply says: “You currently do not have an active DSTV Premium Subscription for the ID Number You supplied.”
The registered account did have an active DStv Premium Subscription which makes the subsequent message somewhat confusing as no ID number was required or supplied during registration.
This error message however does not prohibit viewing online content – simply hit play and the system works just fine.
Some subscribers may also find it irritating to manually input a user name and password every time they want to view a new video – something which the company may want to address in future.
It is however encouraging that Multichoice has released the service to their subscribers, a value-add which will no doubt strengthen their foothold in the upcoming competitive pay-TV market.
Multichoice said that information about the service will be released soon.
