SEACOM construction progress

SEACOM has recently released detailed project plans regarding the construction of the submarine fiber cable system on the East Coast of Africa.

The project started in late 2005 with feasibility and business case studies, and has since then progressed to the cable construction phase after a successful marine survey.

SEACOM says that the system will be ready to serve Southern and East African markets from 2009, well in time to meet the bandwidth needs of the Confederations Cup and the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.

The company further states that it will be the first to complete construction on the eastern route to Europe despite claims by EASSy that their cable system will be operational by late 2008 or early 2009.

Latest developments

SEACOM President Brian Herlihy says that Tyco is currently procuring and manufacturing the physical cable, fiber optic and repeaters.

All the parts will then be assembled to the exact design of SEACOM’s cable prior to loading the cable laying vessel. Herlihy said that the first load will start in Egypt, but that the loads will occur nearly simultaneously.

The Cable System will have 1.28 Tbps of capacity, multiple times the capacity which is available on SAT3/SAFE.
