Cable theft cost Telkom millions

Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri gave these figures on Thursday in a written reply to a question from IFP MP Hennie Bekker.

Telkom has also tried to create a system for estimating the loss of revenue it suffered as a result of cable theft, and has arrived at a figure of R368.1m. The total estimated loss from cable theft is thus about R569m.

However the company said this indication for estimated losses on outgoing calls had to date not been verified for accuracy, and that it related specifically to outgoing calls.

Telkom said that because of possible inaccuracies it did not want to disclose this figure. However the minister included it in her answer. The company says it was not able to calculate the revenue losses due to cable theft on incoming calls.
